The relationship between self-differentiation and irrational beliefs with marital satisfaction in women with marital problems.

Background and Objective: Marital satisfaction, as one of the important indicators of family life quality, can be affected by cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal factors. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the relationship between self-differentiation and irrational beliefs with marital satisfaction in women with marital problems.
Materials and Methods: The present study was quantitative in terms of applied objectives, descriptive in terms of data, and correlational in terms of method. The research population was all women with marital problems referring to clinics and counseling centers in Tonekabon city in the first half of 2010. Using the convenience sampling method and the number of predictor variables, 100 people were selected as the research sample. The research tools included: Skowron and Friedlander's Self-Differentiation Questionnaire (1998), Jones's Irrational Beliefs Questionnaire (1969) with 40 questions, and Enrich and Olson's Marital Satisfaction Questionnaire (1998).
Findings: The results showed that there is a significant relationship between self-differentiation and irrational beliefs with marital satisfaction, and the variables of self-differentiation and irrational beliefs are able to predict the variable of marital satisfaction. Conclusion: The results of the study showed that self-differentiation and irrational beliefs are important factors related to marital satisfaction, and paying attention to these variables can be effective in counseling programs and psychological interventions aimed at improving the quality of marital relationships.
