The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of adaptive and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies in the relationship between self-control and asthma symptom control among patients with asthma. This research was descriptive and correlational in design, utilizing path analysis. The statistical population consisted of all asthma patients who visited asthma and allergy specialists in clinics and hospitals in Tehran during the spring and summer of 2023. According to the recommended subject-to-parameter ratios (5:1 as minimum, 10:1 as acceptable, and 20:1 as optimal), and considering possible attrition, a purposive sample of 153 patients was selected. Participants completed the Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ), Tangney Self-Control Scale (36-item form), and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ). Correlation tests and path analysis were employed for inferential analysis, and data were analyzed using SPSS version 24. The results indicated that all goodness-of-fit indices supported an acceptable fit of the proposed model to the collected data (χ²/df = 1.69, CFI = 0.987, GFI = 0.993, AGFI = 0.895, RMSEA = 0.066). Therefore, the study hypothesis was confirmed, demonstrating that the proposed model showed a satisfactory fit. Overall, the findings suggest that enhancing self-control and promoting the use of adaptive emotion regulation strategies can effectively contribute to better asthma symptom control in patients.
