Abstract

This study aimed to conduct a thematic analysis of the emotional identity dynamics in response to social rejection stemming from mental disorders. This research employed a qualitative design with thematic analysis methodology. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 19 individuals diagnosed with mental disorders who had experienced social rejection. Participants were purposefully selected from Tehran, and interviews continued until theoretical saturation was achieved. NVivo software was used for data coding and analysis. Data analysis revealed three main themes: "emotional experience of social rejection," "identity strategies in response to rejection," and "coping pathways for social reintegration." Subthemes such as shame, internalized stigma, emotional self-care, alternative identity adoption, and seeking safe social support emerged as key components. Participants engaged actively in cognitive, emotional, and social strategies to cope with rejection and reconstruct their identity. The findings indicate that social rejection due to mental disorders profoundly impacts the structure of emotional identity. Nonetheless, individuals can draw on internal and external resources to reconstruct identity and reduce the adverse effects of stigma. These results offer valuable implications for developing psychosocial interventions, anti-stigma programs, and social support frameworks.
